Vauxhall Gardens was a successful and very long-running amusement park in London. It opened in 1616 and was not closed again until 1859. The park consisted partly of long avenues, but also of hidden corners. Musical entertainment of a high standard was also offered. Such as Handel, who was even erected in the park as a life-size statue. Other attractions were fireworks and, from the late 18th century, balloon ascents.
